The smaller local shows are always the best for bringing out hidden treasures you won’t see anywhere else. Case in point: I spotted at least a dozen vehicles at the Bragg Creek show that I’d never laid eyes on before. The real standout was Gord Masiuk’s incredibly rare, unrestored survivor, a 1946 GMC Maple Leaf edition showing fewer than 5,000 original miles.
Seeing it brought back a wave of nostalgia. I’m old enough to have driven a Maple Leaf back in my farm days as a teenager. We were helping a neighbor, Tom, with harvest, and I was assigned to drive his late-forties Maple Leaf grain truck, sketchy brakes and all!
Oddly enough, when I was back home earlier this month for my brother’s memorial, I ran into Tom and reminded him of those harvest days. He told me he still has that old Maple Leaf sitting on his farm today!
