I’ve been looking forward to this event all summer, and the opening day truly delivered. While I usually only catch a teaser of one or two Studebakers at car shows, today was an absolute embarrassment of riches. With the Studebaker Drivers Club Pacific Can-Am Zone Meet hosting its gathering right here in Calgary, I was treated to a spectacular preview of at least two dozen early arrivals.
To kick off the weekend, several of these iconic machines made the short cruise from the host hotel over to the GlenDeer A&W for the classic Friday night “Cruising the Dub” gathering.
Studebaker started in 1852 when brothers Henry and Clement Studebaker opened a small blacksmith and wagon-making shop in South bend, Indiana. The company secured major contracts to build heavy-duty supply and covered wagons for the Union Army during the American Civil War, which accelerated their growth and reputation for rugged dependability.
By the late 1800s, Studebaker grew to become the world’s largest producer of horse-drawn wagons, buggies, and carriages. They transitioned to making cars in 1902. Through the 1920s and post-World War II era, Studebaker earned praise as a forward-thinking, highly respected independent automaker. They were celebrated for cutting-edge, aerodynamic styling and other innovations.
You might see a Packard or two in the mix because Studebaker and Packard merged in 1954. In fact, there was a spectacular 1928 Packard there today.
